Self-Defense is important and necessary for independence, as well as self-preservation. Moreover, defending others is highly motivating for people.

When people see that they are defended by another person, they know that a person will take risks to aid that other person. Not only is self-defense about self-preservation, but it is also about defending other people. You then motivate other people by giving them self-defense.
